Calling it a "drill press" is like calling the Mona Lisa a "drawring".

Something with 4 axis, decent travel (12"+), ball screws with servos and 2hp+ would do nicely.

If it would work with Mach 3, that would be nicer.

I guess I could be happy with 3 axis, 8"x8"x6", 1/2"-10 Acme with steppers and G540 driver. Aluminum, steel and cast iron construction, mounting a 3 1/2hp variable speed router.

We'll find out when it's done. 8)

Gippeto, A bit off topic, I used to do Mach 3. Now, we use all commercial machines. My main VMC is a 24X, 12Y, 18Z with a 10 tool ATC, 8000 RPM 10 hp spindle. Does 800 IPM rapids. Will do 1" endmills in stainless all day.....



Our big lathe is a 21" swing, 3.5" through spindle with 15 Hp. Les, our lathe hand on it. This is the one that makes rounds larger than 1" OD.

Got smaller CNC mills and lathes. Oh and one super large mill coming up, 120 X , 60 Y, 44 Z, this in inches. Machine weighs about 25 tons. CNC BTW 8)

Those muzzle breaks really look awesome. Just really sleek and lethal looking. I know that $35.00 for something that is for looks alone is actually a good deal considering how sweet it is, but at the same time is there any sort of functionality of the device?

These are actually functioning brakes as the 2" ID is the same as the barrel. Earlier in this thread I referred to this not being functional on the BL-417 because of the Barrel ID would be smaller than the brake ID.

I think Tech hit on this before, with a brake you'll lessen the tumble earlier in flight and helping distance and accuracy.

I'm kinda mixing threads here. The UHMW rounds we were testing look very stable. We want to do some high speed video or photos ala Tech. Check for instability.

That said, I think those air strippers are really nice. They gotta be machined to a high accuracy or the pressure drop will not be equal all around. I surmise a poorly done unit would make accuracy worse. Since we currently don't have 4 th axis, we are using programmable indexers. This means we can make really cool shaped holes (coming soon). But we cannot make spirals or elaborate slots going past approx 30° around the periphery.

After our weekend of testing we decided to go ahead brake our muzzle to see if the success we we're having with the UHMW rounds through the 520 would follow suit with the BL-417. It did. I am still surprised the difference. In disbelief, I did one last test fire before chucking it in the indexer. Sure enough, the 1st 20 feet curves 3' left, then 10 feet later 6' down... chuck, index and drill 20 - 1/2" muzzle vents at the 60º, 120º, 240º and 300º angles and shoots exactly as the braked 520. UHMW rounds leaves smoothly and from shooter POV has small wag and corkscrew all within a 12" circle.

looking forward to this weekend. cardboard and golf ball net and box of UHMW rounds to see what kind of groups we can get.

Wow, this is some pretty damn cool stuff!

I'm diggin the Mk19 style flash hider. I really hate not having at least a mill; the CNC/CAD stuff you use is super far out of my price range, though the results are truly professional grade. It's outstanding work, really.
