Summer 2009 Contest Discussion
Not a big fan of the PVC rule to be honest.
A mixture cap or pressure limit would be my preferred change.
Or, to be sneaky, saying that it has to fire an actual potato slug at X range (say about 10m). Excessive firing forces will cause disintegration long before impact.
I think I will take a crack at the other category. Main issue is keeping motivated without anyone to discuss with

Too late.. I've seen it.. It's ok. I won't say and I'm not in the contest.twizi wrote:i am built a (edited by jrrdw to keep you with in the rules) of course and im building my blank
Don't say what your building to enter!
Believe it or not, I was roaming the web and I came across quite randomly, someone's cannon build log with intent to enter. I'm telling you, he's throwing the kitchen sink into it

Did you PM a mod about it?Hotwired wrote:Believe it or not, I was roaming the web and I came across quite randomly, someone's cannon build log with intent to enter. I'm telling you, he's throwing the kitchen sink into it
Nope. It's his business, his log and it's not on this forum.

This has been mentioned previously, but I think that it is unfair to limit the building materials to pvc and abs. What about those of us that are lucky enough to have access to welders and metalworking tools. I know personally that I am better able to work with metal than pvc. It holds better tolerances for sliding components, has better machining properties, and can be welded to avoid excessive amounts of threaded fittings/reducers.
I think instead that there should be a maximum pressure limit enforced by making sure that all contestants film the pressure gauge on the cannon as it is filling up. This is not too hard to do, and seems like it should be something enforced on all competiton videos anyway...
just a consideration.

You can use what you want in the -"Innovative Design Build Off"randompkguy wrote:This has been mentioned previously, but I think that it is unfair to limit the building materials to pvc and abs. It's the penetration part of the contest that restricts building materials.Build a spud cannon or BB gun with something that makes it one of a kind, with a new innovative design idea. Custom made BB guns are being included since there is a section on SpudFiles for them due to the innovations we have come up with for home made BB guns.
The idea can be based off other things, just new to SpudFiles and the spudding world. Must be useful and functional, not just something crazy that does nothing. Must provide a full description of the cannon, how it functions, what makes it innovative, and plenty of pictures and/or video to show it off. Cannon may not be an old previously posted project, it must be fresh to the community and spudding world.

That's the one I was talking about. Sorry, should have clarified, lol

Emphasis on "lucky enough". Not everyone is, and that makes it unfair if some people get such an advantage but others don't.randompkguy wrote:What about those of us that are lucky enough to have access to welders and metalworking tools.
What could easily happen without a restriction to materials that put everyone on the same footing where design skill is foremost is that someone wanders in with FEAR or the HyGaC20, and wipes the floor with the rest of you.
It's an equaliser. Accept it or don't get involved. It's your choice.
You're not limited to PVC for the innovation competition though, so shoot for that if you can't live without your metal cannons.
