The Hater Cannon :: My First Spud Gun
Hm did you ever hold that festival you there talking about ;(...
Very nice cannon.. I think I already posted on this but nway I'd like to say I REALLY like the 1 color spray paint you used and how did you put those perfect letters on the cannon, did you find them or cut them out yourself?
Again good job on the cannon

Your launcher looks great and you should be proud of your work on it.
I also appreciate that you made a statement as to its range, as it's a strong dislike of mine when something that launches projectiles is not described with at least basic information about its ballistic performance.
I suppose one matter is that some people are having difficulty accepting the reported range. On the basis of my experience and understanding of theory, that range is a bit steep but I am open minded and always looking to improve my knowledge.
Either you have built something that defies my (and perhaps others') understanding or an honest mistake has been made that should be corrected and the correction treated with respect by members.
It could well be helpful to make a good-quality video showing the launch, not only to clarify the situation in this forum but for your personal satisfaction and posterity. I did this once in response to criticism of a long range that I once claimed with a launcher, and my inspiration came from television coverage of a golf tournament. Even if you don't like golf, just watch a well-filmed tournament for the camera technique.
You seem to be just the sort of capable person who could rise to the challenge and produce such a high-quality launch video.
As for music, etc. please don't include music unless you can do so skillfully, as in a professionally-made movie, with the music artfully supporting each moment of the action rather than detracting from it. There are few things so unpleasant and "typical" on youtube as to begin playing a demonstration video only to cop a blast of someone's idea of music through the speakers, so I end up muting the speakers anyway.

Whatever man, I've been on this site for a while (im under new name now), but this is one of the nicest first builds I have seen. Good Job. OH, and i have a 4 chamber pneumatic cannon that I used to shoot a tennis ball full of special material and got it .77 of a mile. I havent read all of the other comments (prbly should) , but I can kinda believe you.

We would love to see your cannon. That's a big claim you've made and if it's true, we would take great interest in seeing your cannon.Chernobyl wrote:Whatever man, I've been on this site for a while (im under new name now), but this is one of the nicest first builds I have seen. Having shot tennis balls at 100 PSI with a 2 inch valve cannon, I know the distance claim is most likely bogus. I agree. Much more data is needed for that pneumatic. 100 PSI won't do it unless the barrel is about .6 miles long with a really big chamber. Real world data for tennis ball looks like below. Click on the photo for full size. GPS measured. Launched from shore. Green dots are landings. The far shot was a water filled tennis ball. The pink was a line toss with a full water bottle cross the parking lot.MrCrowley wrote:We would love to see your cannon. If you are getting over 1/2 mile with a tennis ball on air, we need to know the pressure, volume, valve, barrel, and GPS site info. The statement appears to be an order of magnitude high on the BS meter defying physics in the process. Photos of the launcher, compressor and valve details would be useful. Shooting in a hurricane is not a valid test.
At 5280 feet per mile, my best distance is almost 1/5th of a mile.
So please explain to the pushing Mach 1 group how you exceeded it by a long shot.. A chrony shot would be helpful too. What muzzle velocity are you getting?

I wonder how far limes have gone out of the Venom? According to this post, they must have gone at least 2 miles. Someone please enter my name in the official "2 mile club" name book.

I suppose it depends on the "special material" he's filling his tennis balls with, you don't need to break the sound barrier to go far.Technician1002 wrote:So please explain to the pushing Mach 1 group how you exceeded it by a long shot.. The US 4.2 inch mortarfor example fired at well below the speed of sound (around 800 feet per second) and could still reach out to two and a half miles.
Of course this would be with a streamlined projectile of considerable sectional density, features which an ordinary tennis ball does not possess.

To be honest I can't see even a tennis ball full of lead performing well. Tennis balls aren't designed with ballistics in mind.
Plus, why four chambers? That would have no benefit at all, unless the cannon was so unspeakably massive it had to be set up like that.

Or if you had a number of smaller valves instead of one big one...inonickname wrote:Plus, why four chambers? That would have no benefit at all, unless the cannon was so unspeakably massive it had to be set up like that.

You're still inviting a lot of turbulence. It's going to decrease performance.

my old username was nuclearspud, i will have to take some pics real quick and I will post up asap, the cannon is kinda missing a barrel now (got a little antsy building a new cannon). But I work till 8 most days 9 on others so be patient. and there is a "method" to why I can shoot that far, I don't use a qev, or a sprinkler valve. This is a special device that can only be found in power plants, my dad works for a nuclear company so I got it thru him. i will show no pics of it. If you personally message me I MIGHT tell you what I use but if you keep b*tchin i won't.
Ok, I would believe that, but I have seen the cannons in the Pumpkin Chunkin, in DE, and those are HUGE, and they shoot probly like a mile. But i have heard of those valves you can find in power plants my dad works for Exelon Nuclear and he was talking about them before.
