50 gal. barrel noisemaker help please
hi
i get one of this plastic barrel.
to get a big bang i will fill it with metered propane ignite it and .....booom
only problem is i dont have the top lid and i need a resonable bursk disk
any ideas here?
also a question do you think i can get more than one shoot out of them or will it destroy after the first shoot

it seems he wants to make noise.bradisfun wrote:umm y are u doing this???
I would say this is a bad idea but I cannot give you any real reasons why I think so
if you absolutely have to do this cover the top with something like a plastic tarp or something that would not allow too much pressure to be generated

Burst disk - 5-10 layers of plastic wrap stuff.
You need to get hold of an end cap and put a barrel on this!

Propane is heavier then air so it sinks. Leave the top open and start with a small amount, stir, stand back and ignite it. I think you will be surprised in the amount of noise it will make. Test different amounts, but all ways ignite it remotely, there will be a big ball of fire coming out.

I think any plastic wrap will do, or a few layers of kitchen foil tied down with duct tape.

Plastic paint drop cloths, or yard waste garbage bags. I think tarps would be too thick.
drop in a 120mm computer chamber fan with 9v battery taped to it or summat to mix it all, and one of those hobby rocket ignition things...BOOM

Potato Cannon V3 - Spray & Pray .. soon to be converted to metered propane & chamber fan.
I believe gases don't "sink"Propane is heavier then air so it sinks.
Over time, they will mix into a homogeneous mixture and can't be split by gravity.
My recommendation:
-Burst disk. Just find something that's cheap and put on easily.
-Chamber fan. A must. Good mixing will make sure you'll have a bang.
-Metering. For optimal performance, if you want.
-Multiple spark gaps. Further performance enhancement.
The faster it burns, the more it makes a BANG instead of a WOOSH.

If you open a valve and let propane out of it's container, where does it go? Does it float up into the air? Does it sink to the ground? Plain and simple, which direction does it go?

Same as stage fog from dry ice. Or nitrogen gas coming off liquid nitrogen. Being heavier than air it sinks. Given time it will mix together just as when you breathe you dont breathe straight nitrogen but a homogeneous mixture of all gasses mixed together.

I personally think that this would rather end up like this, which is rather unfortunate. I would rather use some big-ass pressure pvc...

Just remember to experiment safely regardless how you go about doing this.
Thanks JSR but I really wasn't looking for a discussion on what propane does when you let it out of it's container...I all ready know that it sinks. Yes it mixes with the other gases in it's environment, just the simplicity that it does indeed sink as I stated above.
I'm now wondering what kind of and how much punishment these plastic barrels can take. They are flexible, but how many times before it burst where you don't want it to.

thx guys
yes i plan it to do in the future
do you really think a simple layer from tarp will work??
the open end of the barrel is mh ~20 inch
my first plan was to close the end with a plastic waterball but i know the noise is far better with a "strong" bursk disk
so i think with a 1/4 thick plywood !?!?
the wall thickness is between ~4 and ~8mm material is PET same as coke bottles are made from
