DR (BewareOfDog) BB Gatlin Gun Concept

Image

As you will probably notice its a 4ish year old concept, and hasn't been built to my knowledge - solid idea though.

solid or not.. what's the point of using a minigun ?
it won't have long range and it will run out of air pretty fast... provided that you can build one that is light enough and works

so IMO it's a much better idea to build one from AEGs

I know that miniguns look cool but what is so cool about a gun that runs out of ammo and air in 4 seconds ?? not to mention that I would rather see a heli with a gun mounted in a remotely controlled turret...

anyway you can build one from part of an AEG but make it look like a minigun...

Whats the point of making air-soft guns look like real ones?... tbh what's the point of air-soft full stop... something doesn't need a point to make it an interesting project does it? For me the most interesting part of this challenge is to see if I can build a miniature replica that works (even for only a few seconds), It bears no consequence of how successful the project is and we certainly wont be marked on it.

The point is fun/interest because its something I have never tried to do :)

Sorry that sounded really confrontational lol.... didnt mean to, all I was trying to say is that this isn't going to be used in an airsoft competition or anything like that, its purly a project that I thought could be fun to attempt

nahh it's ok

the real problem here is that you wrote
we have decided that for maximum effect we should construct a miniature minigun
and it doesn't tell us whether you want something that:
A looks like a minigun
B is a minigun
C has high rate of power and/or is powerful

if what you want is A then I've already suggested using parts from an AEG

the reason why you want to mount it on a gun is not becasue it's the best design for an air gun but becasue gatling guns look cool and are often mounted on helicopters

but the gatling gun (as a design) makes sense only for a firearm not an airgun... (if you want to achieve high ROF the limiting factor for guns with a single barrel is overheating... that's why Gatling guns are used where you need very high ROF)

but I still think that you're not quite sure whether you want something that looks like a gatling gun and has pretty impressive performance or whether you want to build a replica of a Gatling gun

also in case you think that you can't build a gun with high ROF from an AEG read this
A stock airsoft gun's rate of fire generally varies from 10-20 BPS (BBs per second) for most above-100$ airsoft guns. Upgraded guns can get up to 45 RPS generally with out extensive custom work, external batteries, and special motors

While spinning barrels have an undeniably cool appearance, I would agree that you're better off making a simple BBMG. With virtually no moving parts, the weight of the system would be minimal leaving you with more capacity for ammunition and propellant gas.

What sort of weight limit do you have? You could go with a regulated paintball tank for some really devastating performance that will be much more impressive that spinning barrels if you have sufficient allowance, if not as suggested inthis thread using an array of soda bottles as an integral part of the UAV's structure will give you a relatively low pressure high volume solution that will be bulky but light compared to an HPA/CO2 tank.

or you could make a regular BBMG and have dummy barrels that spin around the BBMG barrel to give it the look of a mini gun

Like metalmeltr said,

Just a suggestion...

Spin the barrels but don't actually fire out of them. That'll be an incredible PITA. Have a central barrel (that is also the spinning axis for the dummy barrels). Fire out'a that fixed barrel using either the guts of an airsoft gun or with a CO2 + vortex (or cloud) setup.

If you use airsoft instead of copper/steel BBs you don't have to lift nearly as much weight.

People have made working minigun type bb guns. It aint easy and to get it to work right may be as much work (or more) than the helicopter. (You can buy an RC helicopter from RadioShack for $20. I know of only one place that sells a BB gun that works like a minigun and figure you multiply the RC 'copter's price by a factor of 10 to 100 for that BB minigun.

(Though DRs design might be simple enough to actually get it to work.)

There have been several designs of this type, here's one.

I still think that an armed UAV is already brimming with "cool factor", to waste precious grams and amps on working a purely aesthetic feature seems superfluous to say the least.

Besides, it would also limit rate of fire, and firing from an unstable platform means weight of fire is important to assure a high hit probability, or effectively engage an "area" target.

It might look good for a land based system like Robart, but if you intend it to fly, every gram is extra :)

For a pretty compact setup I would recommend a coaxial BBmg. Link Here is Another one These are incredibly compact and allow for a longer barrel which will bump up your gas efficiency.

Seeing as how a generic BBMG will fire as fast as real minigun I really don't see any reason to attempt an actual working model

If you want the "look" then the dummy barrels could be nearly zero weight (like soda straws).
