Super sonic Potato Gun
No guys, theres no limit to how fast air can travel. I know what your trying to say, leadbath, but keep in mind that not only does increasing the temperature increase the speed of sound, but so does increasing pressure. If you have double the pressure (28psi) youll have twice the speed of sound. You should be fine.
THats not to say you wont need an insane amount of pressure to get that much energy into a potato. Good luck with that.

Yeah you stupid bloody dimwitted asshole moderator. G-d damn it amases me how stupid the internet population is getting. Seriously I think some people should resign from the internet (such as the moderator posting dumb stuff about air pressures) then read some books. That way you'll have something to offer to the other internet users when you come back. Right now, it seems like it's turned into a 365 day bullshit-festival and you're all celebrating your idocy.
Now go sodomise yourselves with your crappy non supersonic phallic guns.

No... NO!!!! BAD STUPID N00B JACKASS!!! BAD!!!!
I wish I could get D_Hall from SpudTech over here to explain it more properly. The speed of sound in compressed air is usually a lot lower the speed of sound in helium. Ever wonder why people's voices get screwed up when inhaling helium, or in a helium rich environment?
Since the speed of sound is a lot faster in helium, the gas can expand a lot faster than the speed of sound in the atmosphere, but it still won't be affected by the obstacles in expanding gases past the local speed of sound, (in helium), therefore, it can expand faster than the speed of sound in the ATMOSPHERE, but not faster than the speed of sound IN THE CANNON HELIUM/HYDROGEN environment...
EDIT - for #1, spelling. #2: it may have been lost with all the arguing, but the original idea is to break the sound barrier. You could switch propellants to helium/hydrogen/nitrogen, although I don't suggest using hydrogen, though it can be tempting, because it's the lightest of them all. Then, to further increase your chances, you can evacuate the barrel with a vaccum pump and a burst disk at the end, to optimize the "push" of the hydrogen/helium/nitrogen. Another good thing is a longer barrel PLUS more chamber volume, not just a longer barrel with the same "standard" chamber volume. Basically, make as long a barrel as you dare, and ALSO keep the chamber volume large enough to keep a, say, 3.5:1 C:B ratio. I would personally go to the longest single piece barrel possible, (20'). You could even make a break down barrel to make 30-50 foot long barrels, but then you'd need to have a larger chamber as well, remember...
EDIT #2: and to answer the question about a golfball barrel on the first page: A golfball would be an ideal projectile because it is (relatively) light, and the dimples around the surface of the ball reduce drag.

The above poster's points may or may not be valid, but naturally I did some background checks before reading anything:
Paradoxically dumb? I think so.
Mark, get off the net, go read some books. Come back later.

mark, what you said made little to no sence. However i think there is supposed to be a point hidden deep within it, so can you try and restate it, a little more clearly?
And hey, come to think of it, why shouldnt air be able to travel faster than the speed of sound, in air, other than because thats what weve always been told.
If you think of a single molecule of O2, fire it out a magic gun ( i dunno, coil gun, a metal sabot?) at mach 5, it wont create some kind of quantum time flux will it? theoretically all the molecules are just tiny projectiles smacking against your potato, why cant they go supersonic? if you give them the energy to overcome the sound barrier they should be right.
i could probably figure out why it doesnt work if i engaged my mind, but im about to go to sleep, so maybey someone can engage their mind and tell me tommorow instead.

Wtf is your problem? A 365 day bullshit-festival??? What bullshiting has been going on? "G-d damn it amases me how stupid the internet population is getting. Seriously I think some people should resign from the internet (such as the moderator posting dumb stuff about air pressures) then read some books" I highly dought that you are smarter than any mods on here. Say that his post was wrong, ONE post out of a lot you are going to pick on? You need to get the dick out of your ass and chill the fuck out.SuperSonic wrote:Yeah you stupid bloody dimwitted asshole moderator. SuperSonic: your just a friggin dumbass, simple as that. Where are your cannons? I don't see them. Some people come onto this website to learn and discuss new ideas; other idiots (like yourself) come here to post bs and insult people online, because they have nothing better to do in their miserable lives? Don't believe me? You searched for Mark's xanga; pretty sketchy I think; an online stalker?
Why don't you just get out? Your not welcome here if your going to be an asshole.

Again! Since this is a forum geared towards spudding, lets make that our main focus! This isnt a forum discussing what you need to qualify to use the internet. Please stick to the original issue at hand, "Super Sonic Potato".
Sorry but I have to chip my bit in about how dumb SS is...
Your little quote intended to "slam" Mark is dumb. Can you "love" a family member? He proably is refering to the lose of a father, grandfather, grandma, etc. Not like sexual appeal in-love. I dont think I need to explain myself further, you were trying to start "crap", rather then point out something "valid".
Please stick to the original issue at hand. Any posts following this one that dont deal with the original issue, and rather this little cat fight, they will be suggested to be either deleted or edited.

He's talking about lighting it after it exits the muzzle. "Hydroxy" is a stoichiometrically correct mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, not just hydrogen, also. You would be crazy to pressurize a chamber with "hydroxy"...
Ok calm down manga dude, i was just asking. Anyways helium is good enough, there is this b-day ballon store three blocks away from me and they let me fill my pneumatic there just that i havent gotten to the speed of sound wich pisses me off.
