so wait, you're saying that if you have a balanced piston, x=y, then with a mechanical opener like an air ram it'd open just fine? or faster?

Either an air cylinder, mechanical rod, or simply a shot of air between the projectile and piston will open an X=Y balanced piston.  I'm thinking of using a sprinkler valve to pilot a future 4 inch.  It would dump air between the piston and projectile launching both.
