I'm considering building a BBMG soon, so I'd like to get a few things ironed out for myself first.

1) For a cloud design, does the position of the air inlet affect feeding? I know jor2daje made at least one high-speed video of a cloud, but I think there were two others that I cannot find.

2) I'm aware there have been problems with BBs colliding in the barrel, but can deformation of the barrel itself be avoided by using a relatively thick-walled barrel, I'm thinking something comparable to sch 40 steel...

3) Is it a bad idea to combine a vortex block and a detent only because the vortex block feeds too quickly, possibly sealing another BB to the detent before the previous has exited the barrel?

1. Generally, not much of a difference because it's a vacuum that draws the BBs into the barrel. I've even successfully made a co-axial cloud that fed just as well as when it was a standard cloud design.

2. If I were you, I'd just get a tight bore airsoft barrel, as close to 6mm as possible, then sleeve it with a rigid steel sleeve.

3. Just make your detent only able to hold 1 BB

This many not necessarily be for airsoft BBs... though that is a distinct possibility.

Good to hear, an ammo suggestion perhaps?

Air inlet position isn't a big deal, barrel position on the other hand is critical.

The higher up the better for reliability, and with my smaller bore (1mm-3mm) projects I found that extending the barrel to protrude into the chamber had huge benefits in terms of feeding.
2) I'm aware there have been problems with BBs colliding in the barrel, but can deformation of the barrel itself be avoided by using a relatively thick-walled barrel, I'm thinking something comparable to sch 40 steel...
That old chestnut.... for airsoft it shouldn't be an issue, my experience with HPA, detents and airsoft was quite positive.

A short barrel is a rudimentary solution. Simply making it strong though looks more like theprimitive deflector plates Roland Garros had fitted to his Morane Saulnier as opposed to Anthony Fokker's more elegant solution.
3) Is it a bad idea to combine a vortex block and a detent only because the vortex block feeds too quickly, possibly sealing another BB to the detent before the previous has exited the barrel?
The detent "controls" he feed to some extent, in the sense that while a BB is stuck in the detent, agitation and feeding stops, so vortex or cloud shouldn't really affect proceedings.

I thought Roland Garros and Anthony Fokker sounded like famliar names. I lolled when I realized why.

Currently laying in bed, trying work up the courage to walk across the room and turn off the light. That's what I get for playing Dead Space 2 at midnight.

So anyway... tomorrow I'll head to the spudding box and look through what I have, see what I can put together from just what I have. Would incorporating a vortex block at all improve feeding into a detent?

Meh, you big wussballs, I don't use lights. Period.

Unless I need to read, spotlight, do something in the dark that I need detail on, or if I'm nightblind.

Learn to have good night vision. Reading by moonlight is brilliant.

Please tell me your first thoughts weren't "What has tennis got to do with that Ben Stiller franchise?" :P

You can get nice Russian made NVGs for less than $500 ;)

Assuming your cloud chamber is big enough to allow the BBs space to agitate, it shouldn't be necessary.
