This explains the intense debate, hope you recover soon!
HAH! You'd have got the same trouncing if I was high or unconscious! lol

BTW, while watching the news today, I noticed a rather unusual-looking APC in a bit about Syria. My brother, who is even more of a military-equipment nut than myself, informs me that it uses a turret-mounted, breech-loading, direct-fire mortar.

Basically, it fires its round at supersonic velocities, rather than the 900f/s that a normal mortar produces. This allows it to be pretty effective in direct-fire over short ranges, as well as having a longer range for indirect fire.

Truly a weird-looking vehicle. It's even lower than the old Soviet BMP, with a tiny little turret... I'll try to look it up tomorrow, when my bro is awake, so I can post a pic.

Yep, the boat looks like a high tech version of the riverine "monitors" deployed in Vietnam.

Hmmm. None of the above. I had some time to look it up, and my brother was off on one point; It's not LIKE a BMP, it IS a BMP. (I didn't recognize it immediately because of the lousy video and screwed-up aspect ratio. Also because I was a little loopy on vicodin...)

The BMP-1, to be precise. It uses a "low-pressure" smoothbore gun that is essentially a mortar.

Although elevation is limited to only 33*, it is still usable and effective for indirect fire. OTOH, the auto-loader in the turret is a complete POS, and has separated quite a number of gunners from their fingers... Some front-line units removed the loader immediately upon delivery, only keeping the magazine conveyor.

BTW, if you watched video of Libyan rebels with improvised weapons mounts, you probably saw one of these turrets welded into a frame on the back of a Toyota HiLux pickup... The Libyan military pulled a lot of parts from their armor before abandoning them, so the rebels just yoinked the turrets out and plunked em into whatever could handle the weight. Pretty ingenius, if you ask me.

Then there's all the other freaky stuff the Libyans put together. I LOVE the remote-controlled Power Wheels Jeep with the PKM...

Yes and no.

It uses the principle pioneered (surprise surprise) by the Germans in WW2 with the Panzerabwehrwerfer 600.

The cartridge has has a high pressure chamber where the propellant ignites, but the gasses are then bled through ports into the barrel, ensuring low pressure meaning a lighter barrel and recoil system is needed.

This is exactly how almost all modern 40mm grenade cartridges work.

Jsefcik, we already discussed this with you. Get it some where you will be able to hide it easier, that way you are more likely to get a job, and not look like a person from the ghetto.
