plotting the chaos cannon

Harness the power of precision mixtures of pressurized flammable vapor. Safety first! These are advanced potato guns - not for the beginner.

Hello all, names chaos im currently planning a hybrid and would like to use yall as a sounding board. I plan on making this cannon out of 6061 aluminum with a t6 temper.
It will have half inch walls with a one inch backplate. the chamber will be 12 inches long plus the 1 fillet on the back plate. Im not sure of the tapper to barrel. The barrel will be 1.5 inches id and have quarter inch thick walls. I plan on going with burst disk for ease of use. and if my math its right I should have a 5k psi working pressure with a safety factor of 2.
So what im trying to ask is what do yall think.
Ps.will an aluminium union work.
Pss. I plan on mounting this on a trailer with electronic directional and range control.

Even though I know nothing about hybrids really... I can tell you that other people who can help you will want diagrams :)

Sounds alright to me. An aluminium union should be fine assuming it can handle the pressure. Because those black iron/malleable iron unions found at hardware stores are fine at a 10x mix in either 1.5" or 2" N.B, I would assume the aluminium counterparts wouldn't differ too much as I think both the aluminium and iron unions are rated for 150PSI WP (which, as we all know, is well below what they can handle).

But if you're planning on going over 10x, let alone approaching mixes capable of 5ksi, I would definitely go for something like #4513K97 on McMaster-Carr. Only $23 as well.

Only one problem its steel not alum. And there alum ones only go up to an inch
I may have to get it custom machined
Or use hydraulics

If the problem is in regards to welding, can't you just weld on an adapter that reduces the chamber to 1.5" female thread or weld on an aluminium 1.5" male threaded fitting? Then you can just thread the steel union on.

You could put a backplate on both ends of the chamber, the difference being that one end is threaded for the fuel setup and the other end has a hole with 1.5" female threads or a 1.5" male threaded adapter welded on.

Not sure if this is an option, I'm just trying to work with the info provided :)

My main worry is if they can stand up to 5k surges. Other then that i like your idea

In that case, you'll have to wait for a more knowledgeable member to reply since I'm not that acquainted with structural properties of welds/pressure vessels.

Here are some examples of hybrid cannons that have custom machined/welded parts:
http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/lardas- ... 15524.html
http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/hybrid1-t14111.html
http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/10xgb-m ... 23523.html

Seems like they all operate in different pressure ranges (Larda's more so than the other two) but they might give you a few ideas about what may be required structurally.

Ok well that last plans been scraped. i now am in the beginning stages of implementing a new plan that will be insane  . while at work (in a foundry) i realized i have the knowledge and ability to make my own high strength steel. i am talking 80ksi130ksi tensile strengths. and i have the capability to cast all the parts i need then get them milled down.
200x is looking very close now. i also bought a 10 million volt stun gun for 11 usd on eBay and have the various electronics needed to replicate Mr.crowley's ignition system. however while i wait on the last few things needed to begin casting i will entertain myself by building a almost mirror image of Mjöllnir. and if that works i will build 2 more and mount all three on a turret mounted on a spare 4x8 trailer i have laying around.
Go big or go home.
