Any machinists here game to try something like this?

I'd be game to do all the turning, milling, threading etc. but that 0.5mm drill in steel mortifies me

Nice little site, and proof that with a little time and patience you can start off with a basic setup and build your own workshop.

Indeed.

Though I wonder why he didn't just turn the crankshaft as one piece eccentrically. I think it would probably be easier than machining that and trying to drill the hole and fit the pin in square.

Today for my lathe I'm going to build a "small parts" chuck. My big chuck is very accurate, but it simply can't hold little bits of work. I'm sourcing the chuck from a Bosch cordless drill (stuffed battery) I got for 2 bucks. Going to grind the jaws as true as I can so hopefully it's accurate enough for small work.

I need to buy some more bits... A 1.5mm and .75mm endmill or so, and some smaller drills. Only have down to 1mm at the moment. It's surprising that such a big machine can work with such accuracy and effectively at small scales. But you don't bother looking for small parts if you drop them on the lathe somewhere, just start another one

Ne'er a truer word spoken. Sod's law states that you will spot the first part from the corner of your eye within 15 minutes of completing the replacement

I've found parts weeks later.. gives you the shits :?

One of my biggest irritations is a tear through. I was making a capsule (small stainless threaded container, with a seamless joint) and was turning down/finishing the OD... Forgot that the piece of stock I was turning from was a bit out of round, forgot to get the capsule running concentric... tore right through the side on my final cut. Derp.

On an unrelated note, watching Breaking Bad :P

Edit: Watched Breaking Bad, holy fuck

So much for hiding in plain sight... though it was of course inevitable.

From another thread:
jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:All this talk of "cooking" is reminding of Breaking Bad, if you haven't watched it yet check it out.

I normally detest American TV series with a passion, but this one I really like.

Anyone ever come across this before? Normally I'd just drop the link in my sig, but I don't think anyone actually looks at anything text-based I put down there
