That is what you assume. Large pressure rated pvc fittings cost more than metal ones of the same size, much more. When I say large I mean 11/2 inch and bigger. The pipe is, meter for meter, a bit more expensive then pvc. Maybe things are different in the US

if i were you i would start with a basic 4" combustion with a chamber fan. 1' of 4" reduced down to 2" pvc and a regular bbq sparker

You could weld up a mount for ya cannon,like a 3 axis mount, that woolud be sweet with a auto fire pheumatic. any ways for the BBQ ignotor go to a hardware store and get one, along with the Sch40 PRESSURE RATED NON CELL CORE pipe and fittins.

If you trust the welds (they'll get a few hundred pounds of tension, and who knows how much torsion)- sure, go and weld up your gun from tubular steel. I'd stay away from the rear of the cannon the first several times you fire... which probably should be done by everyone, as you never truely know when or if it'll shoot the endcap in that direction. (not that it's a common occurance)
Otherwise, I'd go with <i>pressure rated</i> PVC.
You should be able to get a BBQ sparker for 10$ or so at a hardware store.
The person who advoced the use of a chamber fan is in their right mind; you'll see preformance improvements of ~60%, although it does mean more complexity.
I heavily advocate some browsing of the combustion section of the spudwiki. It's my personal oppinion that it'll teach you more than we will in this thread - which allows you to ask better questions and get better end results.
