Does anybody here have any experience with using a drill press as a lathe?
I would really like to have a lathe, but I don't have the cash to get one.
I've seen some threads on machining ABS pistons with drill presses, but can it be taken further?

How do you go about doing that? I'm not sure what tools would be necessary.

Put piece to your drill press. start it, then use files/lathe bits/ drills/grinders/saws/sandpaper to shape and fisnihs the surface

Hey guys,
Have a project going in the background right now and figured I'd ask this here.
I was originally trying to use aluminum to fabricate parts. After doing so I'm not really happy with the durability of some of them, so I'd like to make replacements out of stainless.

The dimensions of the flatstock I need are 1" x 1.75 x at least six inches long.
This size isn't readily available on the small-order metal stores so I want to see if anyone has a chunk laying around before I pay out the butt somewhere else. I will be covering shipping+some extra for the material.

Steel grade doesn't matter, just something that won't burn out tooling easily. 304 would be fine.

Why stainless, just for corrosion resistance?

Be worth going to a machinist, I get a few odd bits of 4140 that way.

Yeah, I want something that'll never have to be cleaned. Also because I have other stainless parts and was noticing a little galvanic reaction where it contacted the aluminum.

Would a machine shop want to bother with something this small, where there is basically no machining to be done? I have no experience dealing with them at all so I don't know how much the price markup would be...

Just ask if they've got any scraps of stainless that you can buy for twice scrap price.

Some of you might remember this epoxy based LOTR themed box I had made for my then girlfriend many years ago:

Against my better judgement, we hooked up again recently so I decided to give it another go reflecting all the skills and tools I've gathered in the meantime, herewith the result. First time I machined wood, quite happy with the result. Finished it in linseed oil.
