Someone in my neighborhood is giving away a Riding Lawn Mower. I think its a craftsman and it looks in pretty good shape. I was wondering what you guys think I could make out of it. I was thinking it would be cool to make it into one of those racing lawn mowers but I don't really wanna spend any money.

Turning it into a racing lawnmower would be pretty cool, and also cheap depending on how far you want to go with it. All you really need to do is remove the deck (for safety, and to lighten it), and remove the governor on the engine. The governor keeps the RPMs of the engine lower, and limits the speed. If the mower is belt driven, you could get a couple different pulleys and a new belt (which you would want to anyway, since rubber breaks down over time.)
Other than that, there isn't much you can do with it since verticle shaft engines are relatively useless except for mowers, and possibly a generator or pressure washer.
If you decide to get the mower, feel free to e-mail me. I have worked on small engines for years, so I know a lot about tuning them up and fixing them. And I would love to be involved with it.

My e-mail address is timbabeu2005@yahoo.com

By the way, I have dreamed of making a racing lawnmower for years, I just haven't had the opportunity yet.

Talk to jjrww, i think he is a mechanic that works on them.

You could always record your own episode of "Pimp My Lawn Mower!".

Depends on what kind of drive assemble it has, hydrostatic pump driven? hydrostratic gear driven? manual - gear driven? manual gear driven with autoshift (shift on the fly some call it)? What size engine? And what kind of engine? I would want to know those answers before i decided what i would do with it if it was up to me.

Spudstuff you where close, it's jrrdw

Nevermind thanks for the help but my dad wouldn't let me get it because if it didn't work we wouldn't have a way to get rid of it.
