The "sawn off" look is cool, but you could very easily increase your barrel length to at least twice the current dimensions and get even MOAR power!
I would say it probably would penetrate at least one side easily assuming it impacted on a perpendicular surface, helmet steel usually isn't that thick and was designed to offer protection against larger relatively slow artillery fragments as opposed to small arms fire. Bigger barrel diameter implies bigger projectile base area, an increase of over 60% in this case, which is directly related to available power.I have to say it has bigger recoil then the 22mm copper barrel, and also a bit more powerful.
